Fire Protection

Below find detailed information concerning each of the following topics:

Suggested Use

National Partitions™ recommends the use of fire protection in any of the following circumstances...

  • Hazardous "combustible" areas
  • Chemical plants
  • Paint booths
  • Load bearing walls.
  • Exit corridors
  • Tenant separations
  • Nuclear plants
  • High occupancy rooms

Endurance / resistance

Fire Endurance and Resistance test ASTM E119.

Similar tests: UL 263 / UBC 43-1 / NFPA 251 / ANSI A2.1

The standard achieved is used to determine the time a material will contain a fire and retain its structural integrity. The test exposes a sample (10'x10') to specific fire temperatures according to a time temperature scale and for a predetermined time, then subjects the sample to a standard fire hose stream. If the sample stays intact then the material has passed the test for that predetermined time frame. If it fails then you must start again and use a shorter time frame. Unless several tests are run at a very high cost each, a company may never know the full capabilities of their product.

flame Spread

Flame Spread (FS) - Represents the surface burn characteristics of building materials.

The testing method is the 25-foot Steiner Tunnel test ASTM-E-84.

The material to be tested is used as the roof of a furnace forming a tunnel. The size of the material used is 20 inches wide by 25 feet. A controlled flame source is placed 12" from one end of the tunnel and regulated to touch the sample 4'6" in. The time required for the flame to travel the distance remaining of 19'6" is compared to Red Oak which was arbitrarily given the value of 100 and cement asbestos board which is given the value of 0. The results listed are proportionate to those values.

Fire Ratings

Fuel Contribution

This is a time temperature curve developed by plotting the temperature measured by a thermocouple located at the 24 foot point (vent end) in the furnace. The value for fuel contributed is derived by calculating the net area under the curve for the test material and comparing this area with the net area under the curve for unfinished select grade 3/4" red oak flooring.

Smoke Developed

The smoke developed during the test is determined by the output of a photoelectric circuit operating across the furnace outlet pipe. A curve is developed by plotting against time the values of the decrease in photoelectric cell output due to obscuration of the light source across the pipe caused by the smoke. The value for smoke developed is derived by calculating the net area under the curve for the test material and comparing this area with the net area under the curve for unfinished select grade 3/4" red oak flooring.
